Testing MCP with Revit: Where AI Reasoning Meets BIM Data

I came across a great post by Karim Tayel experimenting with connecting Claude to Revit using the new MCP (Model Context Protocol). This prompted us to test a similar setup with our Standards Agent for BIM compliance auditing.

The experimental approach sought to determine whether MCP could function as a distributed intelligence framework linking multiple Revit applications, transcending its use as merely a conversational interface.

Key Findings on MCP Implementation

Not every Revit operation translates effectively into a prompt-based format. However, MCP demonstrates considerable promise in domains requiring analytical processing of organized information - specifically when retrieving and modifying parameter values, identifying anomalies, and assessing model conditions without necessitating extensive custom interface development.

Primary Observations

  • MCP's principal advantage lies in supplementing existing interfaces rather than displacing them
  • The protocol establishes a standardized connection enabling artificial intelligence reasoning to span applications and initiatives
  • Exposing Revit element information through this infrastructure permits AI to execute streamlined assessment and verification processes with improved effectiveness

Future Direction

We view MCP as a constituent element within a comprehensive ecosystem incorporating Revit, ACC, and Tandem, facilitated by intelligent agents concentrating on systematic information management, quality assurance, and regulatory conformance.
